    Short, illustrated instructions from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on how to prepare drinking water in the home using simple methods (disinfection, sedimentation and filtration).


    The brochure first of all provides information about the criteria for testing the water quality. It stresses the importance of drinking water treatment and of storing water hygienically and then describes the individual treatment methods. These are written largely in the form of pictograms so that the treatment methods are also understandable for the illiterate.

    Some of the drinking water treatment methods shown here provide suggestions for freehand experiments.

    The processing, treatment and purification of water plays an important role in all kinds of different areas of our life: in the treatment of drinking water for private households, the treatment of non-potable and process water in industry, the treatment and purification of water in circulatory processes such as in swimming pools or in many production processes in industry, and also in the treatment and purification of waste water.
    The topic of "Waste water" is dealt with in grades 7 to 10. The physical, chemical and biological processes carried out in sewage plants offer a multitude of starting points for interdisciplinary teaching of scientific subjects. The interdisciplinary aspect "Environment" can also be dealt with optimally in this connection.
    The media files (charts, interactive graphics, graphics, photos, information sheets, a video, a worksheet, a link list, an experimentation instruction and several guidelines for teachers) will support practical, real-world-oriented teaching on this topic.

    Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 10+:Background information on the content and practical information on conducting the experiment "We produce drinking water – Methods of purifying water". This experiment comprises three subexperiments.The suggested subexperiments are ideal for introducing the basic chemical subject of material separation based on the current topic of water treatment. These experiments allow students to verify their relevant prior knowledge in this field. For biology classes, these experiments lead in to the subject of water as the basis for life. These experiments can also be used in an interdisciplinary approach, e.g., within the context of an environmental project. Except for the hollow fiber membrane, the materials supplied allow eight groups of students to conduct the experiments simultaneously.The experiment comprises three subexperiments:• Rough purification of contaminated water with silica sand, activated carbon, and filter paper• Fine purification of water with membrane filter• Fine purification of water with hollow fiber membrane filterNotes: • Observe the safety information in the instructions as well as the applicable safety guidelines for your school.• All materials mentioned in the instructions will have to be purchased directly from commercial sources.
