    Advantages and disadvantages of globalization
Worksheet:Ten statements on globalization are to be classified as an advantage or a disadvantage (with a reason). The students can classify the statements on the worksheet as an “advantage" or “disadvantage" by coloring in a green or red traffic light accordingly. Yellow stands for “undecided" or “don’t know." In addition, the students should explain in their own words for whom the statement is an advantage or disadvantage (for example for himself/herself, for stakeholders, companies, workers, the environment/nature, etc.) and why.Information and ideas:The worksheet supports differentiated teaching. Of the ten statements, seven are for all students to work on, and three additional statements are for “fast" students. The students should be sensitized to the fact that globalization is neither inherently “good" nor “bad." They should recognize that it depends on who benefits and who gets the worse end of the deal, and what role they themselves play in this.

    Products travel around the world
Interactive graphic:The “world tour" of a T-shirt during its manufacturing process is shown step by step. The following stages in the manufacturing process are shown:• Cultivation of the raw material cotton in the United States• Transport of the cotton to Asia for processing• Processing of the cotton into a T-shirt, e.g., in Bangladesh• Transport of the T-shirt to Europe for selling• Sale of the T-shirt in EuropeThe individual steps can be displayed by clicking the “Next" button. For each step, an explanation can be displayed.Information and ideas:When it comes to the topic of clothing – similar to the topic of foods – the students usually are not aware of what is even feasible and has long become essential for us thanks to globalization. The topic of clothing therefore works particularly well for thinking about globalization. In reality, the individual manufacturing steps are often distributed among many more countries than this interactive graphic shows. And even for secondhand clothing, the “world tour" is often not over yet: Charity organizations collect this clothing in rich countries and send it to poorer countries, e.g., in Africa, where it is then worn, or further processed and possibly sent on a new “tour" in another form.

Advantages and disadvantages of globalization (teacher information)
Teacher information:Teaching method for teachers on the worksheet of the same name. This document lists some sample ideas to spur thought; during class discussion, teachers can give these ideas to those children, for example, who have colored in the yellow traffic lights – thus, those who cannot think of an advantage or disadvantage or do not have an opinion about the statement. The compilation of ideas is meant as background information for the teacher only. It is not suitable for handing out to the students or for letting the students copy it to their exercise books.

How the world is growing together (matching exercise)
Interactive mind map:A mind map with two levels on the topic of globalization can be completed interactively with provided word cards. The world is growing closer and closer together. This has an impact on various areas of life. For the mind map shown here, students match the word cards to the areas society and politics, language, communications and Internet, culture, environment, and economy. The matches can be evaluated by clicking the “Check” button. The solution can also be shown and hidden at any time without interfering with the status of the matching exercise. Information and ideas:The list of areas and aspects is not conclusive. Other areas and aspects, such as joint aid projects or international treaties, can be worked out as a group. This mind map is suitable for grade 4, since some of the terms are difficult. A simple mind map is available as a graphic on the media portal of the Siemens Stiftung.

    The world is growing together
Information sheet:How do children live in different countries of this world? The daily life of six children from different regions of the world is briefly outlined. (The countries are the United States, Colombia, Turkey, Russia, Italy, and Rwanda). Typical aspects of everyday life, such as favorite meals, daily routines, or leisure activities, are addressed. An exercise is also provided in which the students match the flags of the countries from which the children come to the individual children.Information and ideas:Based on the aspects shown, it is easy for the students to transfer their habits (children’s experiences) from themselves to other children and to recognize that children in other countries live “differently." The discussion about other cultures is an important aspect of globalization.
