How I as a consumer can protect tropical rainforests
Information sheet:Some tips for rainforest-friendly behavior as a consumer. The text provides information about possibilities we have as consumers to behave in a “rainforest-friendly" manner, for example:• Eat a vegetarian diet• Support fair trade• Use nontropical wood• Use recycled paperIt mentions a few seals of approval, such as the FSC seal and the Blue Angel, which enable consumers to recognize “rainforest friendliness."

The three levels of rainforest protection (matching exercise)
Matching exercise:What opportunities does an individual have to campaign for tropical rainforests? With this exercise structured as a mind map, the students can deepen their knowledge about how they can protect rainforests. To do so, they match the word cards to the three levels of rainforest protection:• Level 1: Change consumer behavior• Level 2: Support environmental organizations• Level 3: Get involved in politicsThe matches can be evaluated by clicking the “Check" button. Independently of this, the solution can be shown and hidden at any time without interfering with the status of the matching exercise.

Photo collage:Overview of consumer labels (“eco labels") from which sustainable use of tropical wood can be inferred. The photo collage shows some products with eco labels:• Toilet paper and a paper notebook with the Blue Angel (Germany-specific label)• A package of tea with the fair trade label• An ax with a wooden handle and the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) labelThe latter two eco labels are used internationally.Information and ideas:The students can learn more about the individual labels on the Web. For which products are they granted and what are the criteria for granting them? The students can learn about other labels, such as PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), FFCS (Finnish Forest Certification System), and “Rainforest Alliance certified/verified."In addition, the students can list the pros and cons of eco labels: Can such certification really save tropical rainforests?

    Density depending on temperature
Chart: Density-temperature structure of water compared with benzol; comparison shows the density anomaly of water. Most substances have a continuous trend: the higher the temperature, the lower its density. In phase transitions (gas –> liquid –> solid) the density changes drastically in this temperature range. Water however has a density change at its freezing point. The density does not increase as one would generally expect but drops. The graphic shows the density-temperature behavior of "normal" substances (here benzol) as a contrast. Information and ideas:What could cause this behavior? What practical importance does this anomaly of water have?

Comparison of electricity production costs from fossil and renewable energy sources
Information sheet:The production costs for electricity from fossil and renewable energy sources are shown in a table along with additional information. The comparison of production costs for fossil electricity and renewable electricity makes it clear that renewable electricity has become extremely cheap in the interim (as of the end of 2015). Sun and wind cost nothing compared to coal and gas. This results in extremely low electricity prices on the energy exchange. Information and ideas:The students could discuss why there is still opposition to changes that would have lasting benefits for the climate, environment, economy, and each and every person. An inquiry task on “How does the energy exchange work?” could be an interesting assignment for students in upper grade levels.Another possible inquiry task could be to find out the details of how the local energy supplier establishes the end-consumer price.

The rainforest role-playing game: Protect or use?
Teaching ideas:Instructions for a role-playing game that makes it possible for the students to experience the dangers for tropical rainforests. The students should grapple with the reasons for rainforest destruction. The teacher first introduces the topic of rainforests in general and the consequences of their destruction. Then the students should discuss the causes of destruction. They can do so by putting on a fictitious talk show on the topic of “Rainforest – protect or use?" or by role-playing a “UN mini-summit." The students appear as representatives with different interests and defend their points of view.Tips are provided to help the students prepare the content. The game situation is briefly explained. Then the six roles are described in detail:• Plantation manager • Fine wood dealer• Native inhabitant of the rainforest • Peasant farmer• Consumer in central Europe/North America• ConservationistBackground information and links to additional information are provided for working out the roles.A double teaching period should be provided to prepare for and carry out the role-playing game.Information and ideas:Other roles can be added, such as an engineer for road construction.Using the following sources: Dr. Tom Deutschle; WWF 2011 Living Forest Report; “Indigenous affairs 2/05," IWGIA (2005); “Geografie Infothek," Klett; Pro REGENWALD; Süddeutsche Zeitung (Sept. 2, 2012); Schrot & Korn Magazin (09/2012)

A1.1 The lamp should light up! (student instructions)
Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 8+:Detailed instructions and questions for students on conducting the subexperiment “A1 Simple electric circuit – The lamp should light up”.A short introductory text presents the experiment to the students. Then the research question is stated. The students make guesses and exchange ideas about possible solutions. This is followed by a list of the required materials as well as clear, step-by-step instructions for setting up and conducting the experiment in the small group. Observation questions for checking the results can be answered right on the instructions. There are also reflection questions for evaluating and understanding the experiment and establishing the reference to the opening question. An additional research project encourages the students to do further research.A further work assignment establishes a reference to technology. It shows photos of technical applications that are related to the scientific principles researched in the experiment. In “What is your opinion?” students are encouraged to discuss and reflect on value-related behavior.Documentation aids in the student instructions or a blank form to be filled out is provided for documenting the experiment.Information and ideas:• Observe the safety information in these instructions, in the teacher instructions related to the experiment, as well as in the document “Safety information on the topic of energy – Experimento I 8+” and discuss this information with your students.• Also observe the applicable safety guidelines for your school.• These student instructions are also available as a Word file.
