Reverse osmosis diagram

Reverse osmosis is one possible physical method for purifying water using membrane filters.

In this process, pressure is applied to salty water, pressing it against a semi-permeable membrane with extremely small pores. The pore size allows water molecules of around 0.28 nm to pass through, while salt ions are kept back. (Although salt ions in and of themselves are smaller than water molecules, in this case they are significantly larger due to their bonded hydration shell).
This process is used in large plants around the world to desalinate seawater in areas with shortages of drinking water.

Mitochondrion - a mini power plant

In the body, the energy needed for the cellular activity is provided in the form of the molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate). This possesses chemical compounds that are very rich in energy. ATP is obtained from glucose with the aid of oxygen through a process known as "cellular respiration."
The entire process takes place partly in the cell plasma and partly in the mitochondrion, an organelle in the cell. Glycolysis takes place in the cell plasma, while the citrate cycle and respiratory chain occur in the mitochondrion. In this way a total of 36-38 ATP molecules are produced per glucose molecule: Glycolysis and citrate cycle each produce two ATP molecules, and the respiratory chain 32-34 ATP molecules. The mitochondrion can therefore justifiable be called a "mini power plant".

It would make a good research project in biology class in grades 11 - 12 to find out the process by which ATP is consumed in muscular contraction.

Solange das Glas tönt, erscheinen in der Flüssigkeit kurzwellige Randwellen. Das Glas schwingt an den Stellen hin und her, an denen die Wellen auftreten. Dazwischen bleibt es ruhig. Die Schwingung des Glases teilt sich nicht nur der Flüssigkeit, sondern auch der Luft mit und gelangt auf diese Weise als feiner Ton an unser Ohr.Hinweise und Ideen:Der Versuch ist mit den Schülern leicht nachzuvollziehen. Eddy currents in metal objects

If a metallic disc moves through a static magnetic field whose field lines are perpendicular to the direction of movement, voltages are induced in the disc and eddy currents form. According to Lenz's law, the induced current generates a magnetic field to oppose the change in magnetic field that produced the current.
The braking effect is examined at the edges of the static magnetic field. At the position where the disc enters the external magnetic field, the current tries to maintain the state "without the magnetic field?. Therefore, the current is directed such that its induced magnetic field offsets the external magnetic field. The fields oppose each other (in the graphic, the induced field is directed "outward?), resulting in magnetic repulsion. The resulting force counteracts the direction of movement, slowing down the disc.
The situation is reversed at the position where the disc exits the magnetic field. The induced current tries to maintain the state "with the magnetic field?. Therefore, it is directed such that its induced magnetic field strengthens the external magnetic field (in the graphic, the induced field is directed "inward?). This results in magnetic attraction. The resulting force once more counteracts the direction of movement, slowing down the disc again.
