C2 Carbohydrates as providers of energy for metabolism (teacher instructions)

Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 10+:
Background information on the content and practical information on conducting the experiment "Carbohydrates as providers of energy for metabolism - Starch and sugar". This experiment comprises two subexperiments.

This experiment is an introductory experiment to the overall topic of digestion and metabolism in the human body. It is suitable as a qualitative introduction to the topic of digestion for the age group up to 16 years. However, further study of the topic of metabolism necessitates considerable basic knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry, which cannot be assumed until the age group 16+ or acquired then. The materials supplied allow eight groups of students to conduct the experiments simultaneously.

The experiment comprises two subexperiments:
· Potatoes contain starch
· Hydrolysis of starch

Notes:
· Observe the safety information in the instructions as well as the applicable safety guidelines for your school.
· All materials mentioned in the instructions will have to be purchased directly from commercial sources.

Monosaccharides

Interactive table:
For the two monosaccharides aldose (glucose) and ketose (fructose), the molecular formula, structural formula, and functional group can be worked out interactively in a table.

The interactive table can be filled out in two ways:
· All cells at once
· Each cell individually

The tropical rainforest

Content package for interactive whiteboards (for middle/high school):
Individual media related to tropical rainforests are compiled here in a meaningful didactic way for teaching using an interactive whiteboard.

All media in the content package for the interactive whiteboard are included in this self-extracting file. The content package can be started simply by clicking the ".exe" file.

The content package consists of the following media:
· 1 photo: the tropical rainforests of French Guiana
· 4 photo collages on: slash-and-burn and road construction in tropical rainforests (each with a satellite image), eco labels, genetic diversity of crops
· 2 schematic diagrams on species diversity and on temperature variation and rainfall in tropical rainforests
· 1 interactive table with data on carbon storage in the biomass and the forests of the Earth
· 1 interactive labeling photo showing the soil characteristics in tropical rainforests
· 2 interactive labeling graphics on the layers and geographical locations of tropical rainforests
· 3 interactive graphics on the topics: trade winds, typical day in a tropical forest, connection between slash-and-burn and the global climate
· 1 interactive mind map on rainforests in general
· 2 interactive multiple-choice tests with questions on general knowledge about rainforests and their destruction
· 1 matching exercise to deepen the students? knowledge of the three levels of rainforest protection
· 5 information sheets on the topics: general characteristics of rainforests, soil characteristics, species diversity, genetic wealth, and consumer tips for rainforest-friendly behavior
· 1 inquiry task on the rainforest pharmacy (with link list)
· 1 role-playing game on the dangers for rainforests
· 1 link list

Information and ideas:
The media in the content package are also available as individual media on the media portal.

C4 pH value of beverages (worksheet 2)

Worksheet for subject teaching in English:
For the student experimentation instructions of the same name. Methodology tool: word puzzle developed by Josef Leisen and Heinz Klippert.

Note: This worksheet has been developed especially for subject teaching in English and for language-sensitive subject teaching. It uses the word puzzle methodology tool developed by Josef Leisen and Heinz Klippert. Students use the word puzzle to practice the technical vocabulary in an entertaining way.
Students whose native language is not English and who do not have strong English skills receive support and training in understanding the technical vocabulary. They work with the specialized vocabulary and in this way acquire the ability to communicate about specific subjects.

Sugar combustion and cellular respiration in the human body

Information sheet:
Overview of the biochemical processes of cellular respiration in the human body.

The combustion of sugar provides energy to an organism. The sugar is completely broken down during cellular respiration and the released energy is stored as ATP. Cellular respiration takes place in three subprocesses:
· Glycolysis
· Citrate cycle
· Respiratory chain

C3 How does human digestion break down fats? (teacher instructions)

Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 10+:
Background information on the content and practical information on conducting the experiment "How does human digestion break down fats? - Saponification of edible oil". This experiment comprises two subexperiments.

These simple experiments for the emulsification and saponification of fats are well suited as an introduction to the topic of digestion and metabolism in the human body. Starting from the experiment that merely demonstrates that fats can be split into fatty acids, the topic must then be related to human digestion. These teacher instructions provide information and suggestions for this. The materials and apparatus supplied are sufficient to allow eight groups of students to conduct the experiments simultaneously.

The experiment comprises two subexperiments:

· We emulsify oil
· Saponification of edible oil

Notes:
· Observe the safety information in the instructions as well as the applicable safety guidelines for your school.
· All materials mentioned in the instructions will have to be purchased directly from commercial sources.

C2 Carbohydrates as providers of energy for metabolism (answer sheet)

Answer sheet:
For the student experimentation instructions of the same name.

The answer sheet contains sample answers to all questions asked in the student experimentation instructions. In some cases, the answers are very short, often only in the form of key words. Depending on the learning objective, they can be augmented and enlarged upon with additional material from textbooks or Internet research.
Likewise, the answer sheet will be elaborate on the analyses for the individual subexperiments, but only in cases where experience shows that there could be difficulties.

You will find more detailed information in the related experimentation instructions "C2 Carbohydrates as providers of energy for metabolism (student instructions)", which are available on the media portal of the Siemens Stiftung.
