The website contains information about renewable energy sources: sun, wind power, hydropower, biomass, geothermal energy, etc. You can download basic information on the topic or go to the related links. Considerable teaching material is available on the topic for teachers.

Information and ideas:
Students gather practical experience on the topic of renewable energies by designing their own energy model based on simple designs, for example a wind turbine, a biogas generator or a solar car, etc.

Note: This worksheet has been developed especially for subject teaching in English and for language-sensitive subject teaching. It uses the word string methodology tool developed by Josef Leisen and Heinz Klippert. The word string supports the introduction of typical sentence structures in subject teaching and is a language aid for the students.
Students whose native language is not English and who do not have strong English skills receive support and training in understanding the technical vocabulary. They work with the specialized vocabulary and in this way acquire the ability to communicate about specific subjects.

Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 10+:
Detailed instructions and questions for students on conducting the experiment "Renewable energies - Sun, water, wind, hydrogen, and fuel cell". This experiment comprises four subexperiments.

The experiment comprises four subexperiments:
· Electrical energy from the radiant energy of light
· Electrical energy from hydropower
· Electrical energy from wind power
· Conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy and vice versa

For each subexperiment, the students are first provided with an overview of the materials to be used and safety information. This overview is followed by the detailed, step-by-step instructions for conducting the experiment. Afterwards, the students are asked to note their observations. Specific questions are used to guide the students as they analyze the results of the experiments. At the end, the students are asked probing questions related to the experiment (an answer sheet is available for teachers).

Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 10+:
Background information on the content and practical information on conducting the experiment "Renewable energies - Sun, water, wind, hydrogen, and fuel cell". This experiment comprises four subexperiments.


The experiment comprises four subexperiments:
· Electrical energy from the radiant energy of light
· Electrical energy from hydropower
· Electrical energy from wind power
· Conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy and vice versa

The sequence of subexperiments on photovoltaics, hydropower, wind power, and hydrogen technology provides a highly topical introduction to renewable energies. However, the subexperiments require a lot of time and cover a wide range of content. For this reason, the experiments are particularly useful as a project or for a project day on the subject of energy transition. Due to the large scope, it is also highly unlikely that the students will be able to work through the underlying scientific topics during the experiment. Provided that they have certain basic knowledge, however, the students can optimally verify their current knowledge of physics and chemistry based on the subexperiments. Alternatively, the individual subexperiments can also be used as an introduction to one of the basic scientific topics, based on a real-world technical application.

Tropical rainforests as carbon sinks

Table:
Overview of the amounts of carbon stored in the biomass and the forests of our Earth.

The values in the table clearly show that no terrestrial ecosystem stores more carbon than the remaining wood of existing forests (82 percent of all carbon).

Information and ideas:
Based on these data, the class can investigate the two climate-control functions of forests: In addition to their property as a giant carbon sink, the large forest areas also function as giant air-conditioners.
