Wave power plant (ES)

A funnel-shaped roof covers the surface of the water. Inside, the waves rise and fall, compressing and expanding the trapped air. The energy stored in the pressure difference is converted to electric power by a Wells turbine and generator. The special feature of a Wells turbine is that, once in motion, it maintains the same direction of rotation, regardless of the direction from which the water is flowing. The reason for this is the turbine’s completely symmetrical blade profile.A wave power plant in Scotland supplies as many as 50 households with electrical energy. However, the cost/benefit ratio of such power plants is relatively poor, which is why hardly any other wave power plants of this type have been built worldwide since 2011.

Note: This worksheet has been developed especially for subject teaching in English and for language-sensitive subject teaching. It uses the matching exercise methodology tool developed by Josef Leisen and Heinz Klippert. The matching exercise is particularly well suited for work in pairs and groups as well as for practicing.
Students whose native language is not English and who do not have strong English skills receive support and training in understanding the technical vocabulary. They work with the specialized vocabulary and in this way acquire the ability to communicate about specific subjects.

Experimentation instructions for Experimento | 8+:
Background information on the content and practical information on conducting the "Recycling? experiment, which comprises three subexperiments.

The teacher instructions include information on the following: the main question, relevance to the curriculum, skills, notes on conducting the subexperiments, the research group, further research assignments, and the reference to values.

The experiment comprises three subexperiments:
· Recycling old materials
· Making new from old: Making paper
· Recycling organic waste

From huge mountains of trash to the recycling of individual materials: By dealing with the topic of recycling, the students will become sensitized to an important topic of environmental protection and sustainable use of our Earth. In working through the planned subexperiments, they will be shown opportunities for how they themselves can make a contribution toward preserving the Earth in their daily lives. The students will learn that waste separation is important and that new products can be made from various old materials.
